Dec. 11th, 2008 04:39 pmI made meatballs for dinner tonight. I was in the process of making a perfectly lovely gravy to go with the mashed potatoes -- the roux was almost that perfectly copper-penny color -- when the spatula that I was using to stir with melted and disintegrated into the pan.
This is something I have never seen. I was using a very low flame on the gas stove and stirring the roux like I always do. I pulled out a big chunk of plastic (who ever heard of a turning spatula that wasn't heat resistant?!?) but there were bits of black scattered throughout the pan and I couldn't tell whether they were browned bits of meat or melted bits of spatula. No choice -- the whole thing got washed down the sink. ¡Que lástima!
And now we shall have mashed potatoes with butter and plain meatballs, since the kids won't touch tomato sauce with a ten-foot fork. Still good! but not at all what I hoped for...
