When I started this journal he was 2.
Oct. 3rd, 2009 09:12 amMy baby boy turned 10 last week. He still (sometimes) likes me to hold him. Thank goodness I'm strong and he's not too big (53 inches, 63 pounds)!
He's currently devouring ("reading" just isn't descriptive enough) the entire Series of Unfortunate Events. Yesterday he finished The Penultimate Peril and spent the evening delightedly watching the Jim Carrey movie, which seems to have tried to compress all 13 books into one feature-length package. (His sister hid in her room and watched Disney's Little Mermaid, except when she crept halfway down the stairs to see what her brother was watching. They both loved the creepy animations during the closing credits.)
He finally, after months of working at it, earned his orange belt in Uechi Ryu karate. He can't wait to get his own set of sparring gear, even if it does turn out to be mismatched hand-me-downs. As long as nothing's pink, he should be fine.
Last week he started his second year of trombone lessons for school band, and his second year of Webelos -- the last year of Cub Scouts before he can become an official Boy Scout.
There is still ballet class once a week, which he sometimes complains about, but he knows if he wants to be part of Nutcracker it's not optional. So far he hasn't told me he doesn't want to be part of Nutcracker -- he's even learning a new part this year.
Anyone would think that with all of these activities plus fifth-grade homework that he'd never have a moment of downtime, yet he has free time on the computer or television almost every day, and still seems to have time to play outside or with his toys.
I suppose in spring he'll want to play baseball again, which may be the proverbial straw, but we can burn that bridge when we get to it (to mix a metaphor or two).
There's been a lot of other stuff that's happened, of course, since the last time I wrote regularly in this space. Some of it I may never write about. Some of it may be worth remembering -- to me at least. None of it will be written today, however; I have a birthday party to get ready for.
Happy fall.
