So in news that is no longer really news (and perhaps never was really newsworthy), central Massachusetts was not in fact buried by huge drifts of wet heavy snow during the evening commute yesterday. This morning there was approximately half an inch of snow dusting the front walk and driveway, and this afternoon was 40° and sunny.

In honor of this most springlike day (lying groundhog!) I am spring cleaning. Actually I started "spring cleaning" late in January, figuring that I have enough of it to do that I could use a few extra weeks. Or months.

I don't consider myself a slob per se, although pretty much anyone else who dropped by unexpectedly would probably disagree. It's just I usually think other things are more important than cleaning, and I have a fairly high tolerance for disorder. Usually. Lately, however, I've been making a connection between the chaos all around me and my frequent nosedives into depression and self pity. What better place to wallow than a pigsty, after all?

I tackled the kitchen late last week and have managed to keep it fairly presentable. Keeping it clean is definitely easier than cleaning it in the first place. Lately I've been extending the clean areas beyond the kitchen, into the front hall and the office area. And I've just noticed in the last day or two that I've somehow been transformed into someone who sweeps the kitchen floor every single day -- not just when it's crunchy -- and that I actually feel antsy when things are out of place. Plus, I'm going through hand lotion like nobody's business because of my dishpan hands.

Of course I haven't tried to tackle the worst areas yet -- the living room, where we really do LIVE, and the kids' bedrooms -- but I'm feeling pretty good about my progress so far, and less out of control.

I need some of that right about now.
