Last night I dreamed I found a pair of my dad's old glasses in an end table drawer. They were crazy old coke-bottle things that my father never wore in reality, but when I held them and looked at them I could see my daddy as he looked when I was a little girl.

I looked up from where I was kneeling and asked my mother if I could have them, thinking to myself that someday I would really miss my father and I would want to be able to remember him.

I could tell by the look that crossed her face that she knew exactly what I was thinking, and when she made some excuse about the glasses needing to be repaired, I knew she wanted to keep them herself.

And I knew why.
