So glad I didn't pay another $90 to fix the other computer. Turns out McAfee doesn't support Windows 2000. The tech I got for the "live chat" (which I strongly suspect is canned) basically said "Sorry for the inconvenience. Please update your operating system."

I typed back, "Thanks for nothing."

The tech's reply? "You are welcome."

Holy crap.

I once dealt with McAfee for a virus problem. Ended up just wiping the computer. Twice. I am absolutely /convinced/ their livechat is staffed by monkeys with pre-written responses keyed in.

They do not listen to the actual words you say, ever.

Now that you mention it, I remember you ranting about McAfee some time ago. I'd forgotten.

That's because Bill Gates owns a part of everything computer based. Hubby's laptop completely died and he had to get a new one. Of course it's uploaded with Windows 7. Of course Office 2003 (which we own) isn't compatible and he's taking online classes so he has to have some form of Office. Of course, three days before Office 2007 was ordered off market by Bill Gates Corporation so he had to pay for Office 2010.

That really sucks. I feel bad for anybody who got stuck in the Vista/Windows 7/which version of Office do I need crap.

In this case I wasn't really shocked to hear that the OS on my 10-year-old computer (at least) is obsolete. I was more annoyed that I've been a McAfee subscriber since at least 2006 and never got any communication from them to notify me that they were stopping support for Windows 2000.

I've gotten several emails -- and even actual paper mail -- from them to notify me that my credit card expired and my support won't be automatically renewed, so obviously they know how to reach me when something happens that's inconvenient for them.

2000 is so obsolete that I'm having trouble finding a migration path to an upgrade. XP is very nearly obsolete at this point.

And what Bill Gates doesn't own, I guess Steve Jobs does!

So by the end of July I need to either upgrade the OS or find an AV software that supports 2000. I'm beginning to really hate computers.
