ARGH. Okay, so that's the end of McAfee. I'd been ignoring their notifications that the credit card information they had for my autorenewal was expired, figuring the renewal would just lapse. But lo! McAfee somehow helped itself to updated credit card information and charged my account! Customer Service chat is every bit as annoying and unhelpful as Tech Support chat. There is NO WAY a live person is responding to these.

So I wasn't able to get an explanation as to how they managed to renew my credit card information or why they failed to notify me that they would no longer be supporting my computer's operating system (you can't tell me that a company that can figure out how to renew my credit card information has NO IDEA what operating system I'm running), but I did get promised a refund.

Now to find antivirus software that doesn't actually suck. Suggestions?

Avast! works for me. It's free, but with an option of upgrading to a 'pro' version.

I've been using Symantec/Norton because that's what I got free from school, but I haven't had to deal with them like I have McAfee (that may be a good sign come to think of it - it's been almost 5 years)

At school, our tech guys have chosen to go with Kapersky and swear by it.

I know several people who rely on Avast! To good effect.

I use AVG free, available on CNET.com.

I hated McAfee, too. I use a combo of Norton and MalwareBytes and this seems to work well.

AVG for me - there's a free version, but I decided to buy their slightly-better version just for kicks. It came highly recommended to me - both free and purchased.

I've got Pc Tools Doctor, and it seems to work quite well for me.
