Japanese studies continue. Things are beginning to make sense. My mother-in-law gave me a workbook to study from, and it had no English in it at all. Just romaji; please write in hiragana/katakana. And halfway through the workbook, with no explanation or instruction, please write in kanji. Clearly it was a companion piece to some textbook or course, and someone had already filled it in (with some of the worst handwritten Japanese I've ever had to read), so I just put it aside.

I took it out again a couple of days ago and realized I've studied enough vocabulary that I actually understand what's written. やった！So I took out a notebook and started writing the kana myself, without looking at the filled-in bits. If I felt like I knew a kanji -- there are not many I'm dead sure of but 行く and 持つ are two examples of kanji I know really well -- I used that instead of the kana.

Going back and reading what I'd written a couple of days later was challenging, but I can do it. I can do it! This is so freaking cool.
