What is it that compels a cat to immediately christen a freshly-scooped litter box?

Another random observation

I backed up every document on my laptop when the hard drive choked. Today I reinstalled -- exactly two documents.

This is probably a metaphor for the multitude of things I can't seem to throw away but would undoubtedly not miss if I lost them...
