My kids both stayed home from school today. Danny is on day two of a medium-grade fever and congestion, and today Sadie had a low fever as well. So I celebrated 60° and sunshine by dragging both kids onto the front porch and cutting their hair. Sadie joyfully tossed the cuttings into the warm breeze for birds to use for nesting material.

The annual Nutcracker party is Saturday night; we don't have a sitter and I don't feel well so I'm having a hard time getting excited about it, despite the fact that it's an annual event that I generally look forward to. Let's add the kids' general malaise to that, and the fact that Danny's school is currently in the midst of an outbreak of head lice -- and the rather depleted state of our bank accounts after the holidays -- and see if anyone is even willing to watch the kids for a party that doesn't even really get going until after 10:00 p.m. (and generally ends around midmorning of the following day). I so envy folks who have conveniently located and willing grandparents for such occasions.

I think I need to go back outside again for a while before it gets dark; typing this out has made me realize how down I am about the whole upcoming weekend.

Time to plan a weekend of popcorn, movies, and board games interspersed with bouts of grilled cheese sandwiches and banana splits. Yup. (And lots of orange juice on the side for those with sniffles.)
