I was afraid of this.

Not surprised, really, but very, very sad.

Another site suggested that molt failure might have occurred due to too much protein in its diet, which is certainly possible as the upside-down behavior started immediately after the molt. There's lots of advice on how to prevent molt failure but no clues as to whether there's any way to help the poor thing recover from it.

And considering its size it has probably already lived most of its two to three year life expectancy, really.

I gently let Danny know over breakfast that the crayfish might be nearing its end, and offered to help catch a new one next summer.

Oh dear.. I am sorry. Having had pets die recently, I know how hard it is with children. I suppose its part of life's learning curve, but it doesn't hurt any less when it happens.
